"You're Too Sensitive"

Updated: Jun 22

"You're too sensitive!", a sentence I heard many times in my childhood. Often, my family and friends would describe me as susceptible and tease me about it. I remember wondering why I was different and why things that were seemingly trivial would affect me so deeply.

I spent most my teenage and adult years trying to repress this deep feeling and tried my hardest to fit in. In doing so, I lost myself. I spent years trying to conform to societal expectations, suppressing my true emotions and instincts. This constant effort took a toll on my mental and physical well-being, to the point I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in my late 20's, all the while seemingly excelling in the field of finance. I felt disconnected from myself and from the world around me, always striving to meet standards that didn't resonate with my authentic self.

Little did I know that years later, I would finally understand why I am the way I am.

Realizing that I am an empath has been a profound revelation. For years, I thought of my sensitivity as a weakness, something to hide or work hard to overcome. However, I’ve come to see it as a strength. Being an empath means having a unique way to view the world, one that is deeply attuned to the emotions and energies around me.

Empathy allows me to connect with others on a profound level, understanding their feelings and experiences with remarkable clarity. This sensitivity is not a burden but a gift, enabling me to offer genuine compassion and help others. It has empowered me to navigate social dynamics in life and at work with a keen insight that many others lack or don't tune into.

Understanding what it means to be an empath has taught me the importance of self-awareness and self-care. I’ve been learning to love myself unconditionally, to honor my feelings, and to cultivate environments that nurture my wellbeing. This journey of self-discovery has transformed my perspective, allowing me to embrace my true nature with pride and confidence.

In a world that often values stoicism and emotional restraint, embracing my sensitivity has become an act of defiance and empowerment. It has given me the strength to be authentic, to share my experiences, and to inspire others to honor their own emotional landscapes.

So, to anyone who has ever been told they are too sensitive, know that your sensitivity is your superpower. It is a unique lens through which you perceive the world, offering you a depth of understanding and compassion that is incredibly powerful.

Embrace it, nurture it, and let it guide you to a life of profound connection and fulfilment.
